8 Original uses of aluminum foil

While we are used to using aluminum foil as part of baking, cooking and wrapping mean, there are a few other surprising uses that are worth knowing and implementing.

unnamed-10

  1. Create baking dishes – you are about to bake a cake but you do not have a suitable dish? With aluminum foil folded into several layers, you can create a stable frame of the desired size and place it in an existing dish.
  2. Polish the silverware – cover a pan with aluminum foil. Pour a glass of water and two tablespoons of baking soda on it and place blackened silver inside. Leave the silver for five minutes, and then wash as usual. The black layer will disappear and the tools will become silver and shiny again.
  3. Upgrade the mirrors – most mirrors have a silvery gray back coating that can peel off and be seen through the mirror. Stick a small piece of aluminum foil over the peeled area to return the missing piece to the mirror.
  4. Sharpen old scissors – fold paper into a square comprised of eight layers and cut it through using the dull scissors. The transition between the layers will sharpen the scissors.
  5. Renew the jewelry – in a bowl covered with aluminum foil, mix warm water and a large spoonful of Sano Maxima Washing Powder. Dip the jewelry in solution for a few minutes and rinse well with running water. Let the jewelry dry in the air. The laundry powder contain active ingredients which – in combination with the aluminum create a chemical reaction that makes the jewelry shine and annuls the oxidation process that the metal undergoes.
  6. Quick repair of the TV remote control – the spring of the battery is worn out and it loses its elasticity? Place a small piece of rolled aluminum foil at the tip of the spring; it will improve the electricity transmission from the battery to the remote control.
  7. Keep pigeons and birds away – in order to keep the winged creatures away from balconies or the fruit trees in the garden, cover the balcony handrail or some of the fruits on the tree with aluminum foil. The shine and the reflection in the sun deter the winged creatures.
  8. Remove rust – in cases where rust appears on screws or hangers in the bathroom, rub them with aluminum foil. The chemical reaction between the aluminum and the chromium, which is usually used as a coating material, will remove the rust.

How to clean the oven

Your oven is dirty? Contrary to what is believed, the cleaning of the oven should not be a very difficult task. Here is how you will clean your oven one step after the other, including one tip for clearing bad odors.

Burnt oil, cake leftovers and unpleasant odors are all clues indicating that your oven needs cleaning. Contrary to what you may think, the task of cleaning can be easy and simple if you follow some rules.

Preventative treatment – in order to avoid any leaks and staining of the oven during use, place an aluminum pan on the bottom of the oven to absorb leaked liquids or other food residues.

Immediate treatment – the oven got dirty anyway? Don’t wait, clean it immediately. When the grease dries and is fixed on the surface, it is more difficult to clean it.

How to clean the oven, step by step?

  1. Softening the oil marks – spread drinking soda over the dirt centers, fit a heat-resistant porcelain bowl filled with water in the oven, and turn the on oven at high temperature for 20 minutes. The steam will soften the dirt and will make the cleaning task easier (after turning it on, let the oven chill. Do not clean the oven when heated to prevent burns).
  2. Spray Sano Ovens Forte Plus or spread Forte Plus Gel – a cold grease remover suitable for ovens, on extremely difficult dirt. Use gloves for protecting the hands during the cleaning process.
  3. Crumbs and sauce and oil stains are sometimes accumulated in the plastic rubbers around the oven door. Clean the internal parts of the rubbers using a cloth. In the case of stains, rub them using a toothbrush soaked in a solution of drinking soda, ½ cup of vinegar and ¾ cup of water. Do not spray the cold grease remover on the rubbers as it may damage them.
  4. Clean the oven pans using dish soap or Sano Forte Plus degreaser. Spray or pour some of the substance on the stained areas, wait about 15 minutes, and rub as needed until the stain is cleaned.
  5. And finally: how do you clear bad odors from the oven? Squeeze 2 lemons into a heat-resistant bowl and add 2 cups of water. Place the lemon peels into the bowl and place in the oven for 20 minutes at a high temperature.

Types of stains and the simple way to remove them

Everyone knows that stains require work and focused attention. We are used to treating the formed stains in all sorts of ways and in all kinds of methods. Have you ever thought of why does every stain require a different action? Why are there easily removed stains while others are more stubborn? To really understand how stains can be treated, it is important to understand what they consist of;

Stains are divided to three, according to the type of substances that effectively decompose them:

Protein and sticky starches stains – difficultly removed stains that are made by eggs, porridge, milk delicacies, blood, cornflakes, meat, etc. These are stains that are best removed by means of enzymes.

Fatty stains – stubborn stains that are resulted of olive oil, butter, grease, makeup, etc. These stains are best removed by soaps and soapless soaps (fats dissolvers).

Color stains – stains containing pigments such as coffee, wine, tea, puree and fruit juices, tomato paste, etc. are best removed by oxidizing substances that will effectively dissolve the stains.

So what really is the problem? Why are we sometime find it so difficult to remove stains?

Many stains are complex stains. Bolognese sauce, for example, is comprised of protein stains (the meat), from fat stains (olive oil) and from color stains (tomatoes). In order to effectively remove the stain, a strong product is needed, such that combines all three technologies. Just for that, the Oxygen series launches the Sano Oxygen POWER, a powerful stain removal powder suitable for both colored laundry and white laundry! Sano Oxygen POWER combines the three components necessary for the removal of all types of stains; enzymes, active oxygen and lipid solvents. The unique combination of the three components enables the Sano Oxygen POWER to handle even the most difficult stains and to return the sparkle to the laundry.

Tips for the user:

In cases of difficult and spotty stains it is important to take care of the stains before washing. You can use the measuring spoon for the mixing of equal amounts of water and Oxygen powder, and to lightly rub the formed paste onto the stain. At the end, use it in the washing machine as an additive. In the case of normal stains, you can simply wash the clothes in the machine and add the Oxygen powder in the designated compartment.

The mosquitoes that crossed the border

A trip after the army, a honeymoon or a vacation attracts travelers to travel in exotic trips overseas. Unfortunately, mosquitoes also like to travel with them. Why can mosquito bites be dangerous for us, and how can they be avoided? Professor Eli Schwartz, Director of the Tropical Medicine and Tropical Diseases Center at Tel HaShomer Hospital, provides the answers to the sting questions.

It isn’t a snake, nor a lion and not even a white shark; the most dangerous animal to mankind is the mosquito. Surprised? “Some 700 million people a year get sick of mosquito-borne diseases”, says Professor Schwartz, Director of the Tropical Medicine and Tropical Diseases Center at Tel HaShomer Hospital, “some of which have climbed to the top of the list of deadly diseases in the world in recent years, overtaking even malaria.” So what makes the stingy insect so dangerous, where in the world is it found and how can we protect ourselves from it? We went out there to check.

Travel Warning: Mosquito Ahead

“First of all, it is important to know,” stresses Professor Schwartz “that not every mosquito that stings us transmits diseases, and not every mosquito is able to transmit any disease. It is important to identify the lethal mosquitoes and their place of action so that we know how and when to protect ourselves.”

So, who are the most dangerous mosquitoes in the world, and are there any in Israel? Our list starts with the Aedes mosquito. “Its name originates in Greek and means – discomfort and pain, and its name indeed stands for itself”, Professor Schwartz warns. “In addition to its painful sting, it is able to transmit multiple diseases, including dengue fever – a viral disease that can even cause death”. The disease is common in almost all parts of the Far East, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Africa.

In Israel, the mosquito is named the “Asian Tiger”, a mosquito that develops in standing water, and even in small reservoirs, such as planters or flowerpots. It originates in the Far East (hence its name). According to estimates, the mosquito arrived in Israel with goods imported from the Far East to Israel. This mosquito can transmit, among other things, the Dengue Virus and the disease that has recently been highly publicized in the international media – Zika Virus.

The Culex Pipiens mosquito is a mosquito that exists throughout the world, including in Israel. A mosquito that is mainly active at night and during the summer time. In Israel, it transmits the West Nile Fever, a severe fever disease that mainly effects throughout the summer time. “The virus originates in birds migrating from Africa to Europe during the months of the summer, where the infection begins when the mosquitoes sting birds to get a blood dose therefrom, and if they bite a human, they will transmit the disease to humans. There is not vaccine against said disease”, as Professor Schwartz explains.

Anopheles Mosquito is a famous mosquito that transmits Malaria. Malaria existed throughout the Western world, including Israel and was eradicated in the mid-20th century. “But we still see many cases, including malaria-related deaths,” says Professor Schwartz. “Nowadays, there are many travelers who traveled to areas affected with Malaria (mainly Africa) and returned with Malaria. The Anopheles Mosquito too belongs to the family of mosquitos that bite and therefore, the main protection should be between the evening hours and through the early morning hours. In addition to application of lotion, there are tablets intended for the prevention of Malaria”.

“Many travelers who travel to Europe think that there is no danger of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes” says Professor Schwartz. “But the truth is that in Europe, too, we know of the existence of the Aedes Mosquito and in certain areas it is possible to be infected with Nile Fever”.

So these diseases are actually a problem for travelers only?

“Not at all”, according to Professor Schwartz. “Please bear in mind that some of the diseases exit in Israel too. It is true that diseases transmitted by mosquitoe bites is one of the problems experienced by travelers abroad, but with globalization and the import of goods from overseas, they reach Israel and so it is important to be aware of them”.

Here is how you can protect yourselves from mosquito bites abroad

Finally, it is important to note that it is best to avoid mosquito bites to the extent possible, even while abroad.

Here are 10 tips by Professor Eli Schwartz for avoiding stings:

  1. Apply a mosquito repellent substance, a substance that contains DEET at high concentration (25% or more).
  2. If you are traveling with children and infants, you can use mosquito repellents designated for them.
  3. In contrast to what is commonly believed, mosquito repellents purchased in Israel are effective abroad as well. It is better to buy these materials in Israel because of the supervision and knowledge of what these preparations contain.
  4. Make sure to sleep in rooms protected from mosquitoes. Sleeping in a non-air-conditioned room? Make sure there are intact nets on the windows and a mosquito net around the bed.
  5. Traveling with a baby carriage? Wrap it tightly with a net and check that there are no holes in it.
  6. You can use a mosquito repellent device that plugs into the electricity.
  7. Travelers who have been bit overseas and got sick – if you plan on returning to Israel within two weeks of the disease, please protect yourselves with mosquito repellants, that is – to avoid being stung by a local mosquito that will transmit the disease to others.
  8. Each mosquito has different operating hours. The mosquito that transmits Malaria is active at night, while the mosquito that transmits the Dengue Fever and Zika Fever is active during the day. Check out the common diseases in the areas where you are traveling.
  9. Mosquitoes are attracted to water reservoirs and they should be avoided as much as possible. If you are interested in walking by a lake, steam, or river – observe the rules of protection more carefully.
  10. Carefully read the leaflet enclosed to the mosquito repellent products and make sure they are approved by the Ministry of Health.

How to clean stubborn stains?

Not only our clothes get dirty, but even various surfaces around the house are not completely resistant to stains. Here is how you will get rid of persistent stains.

We all sometimes have a stubborn stain on the shower tiles, the kitchen ceramic or marble that refuses to come off despite vigorous rubbing with soap or wiping with a cloth. Each surface has unique stains according to the nature of its use and the natural characteristics of the material of which it is made. This is how you can strengthen and clean the various surfaces around the house properly.

Marble surfaces

The working surface, the marble counter top, that we usually have in the kitchen can be stained by foods prepared on it or such formed in contact with water. Wine, beetroot, pomegranate, oil and spices such as turmeric and paprika may leave marks on the marble counter top. As with any stain care it is important to ensure immediate action and not wait for the stain to dry and deepen its grip on the surface. Various acids, degreasers and bleach are prohibited for use on marble and Caesarstone and can lead to disintegration of the material. So what can be used?

Sano Caesarstone, marble and granite – a unique product developed in cooperation with Caesarstone Ltd. The active ingredient in the preparation is made of fine mineral powder that does not harm the natural stone. Spread some of the material on a cleaning sponge, rub the stain and wash with clean water. The counter top in the kitchen is naturally exposed to water, as a result of which there may be limescale stains. Vinegar and lemon salt are known as limescale removers, but they are acidic, and therefore it is not recommended to use them on the counter top. Sano Jet can be used in the kitchen or Sano Clear to clean windows. As a preventive treatment, you can use limescale filter on the water system in your home.

Bathroom tiles

Moisture and water vapor accumulate in the bathroom, causing mold stains. The best way to get rid of mold is by using bleach. Bleach sterilizes and destroys bacteria and fungus. Sometimes the mold develops between the joints of the porcelain tiles, in which case it is recommended to clean the area with Sano Javel spray, or Sano Mold Removal spray, specifically developed for this purpose.
Rust stains are also quite common in bathrooms. Rust is created when metal is exposed to water and oxygen. How do you clean it? Spray Sano Anti Kalk, wait some ten minutes and rub thoroughly. If you do not have Sano Anti Kalk, spread some salt on the stain, so that it covers the stain and pore juice from a whole lemon over it. Wait about an hour and rub thoroughly using a toothbrush.

Walls

The walls of the house are not resistant to stains, especially in places exposed to the touch of the hands that absorb dark stains, and, of course, color scribbles, stains created by furniture or chairs and shoe stains.
The ultimate wall cleaner is the Wonder Sponge, which removes almost any stain, even those that are extremely old. By the way, in fresh stains, wipe it with a wet wipe, that should suffice.
By the way, if it is a plaster wall, be sure to use only a wet cloth and of course do not expose the plaster to running water that can cause irreversible damage.

How to treat the washing machine periodically

In order to prevent as many malfunctions as possible, and make the machine work better and get really clean clothes, it is recommended to periodically maintain the washing machine for cleaning and preservation of it over the years

The washing machine is one of busiest devices in the house, certainly in family homes. If you have small children in the house you probably run it every day, sometimes even more than once a day. Over time the washing machine may accumulate scale, dust and even mold all that may affect the clothes and of course the proper functioning of the machine. Washing machines are designed to last for many years. With proper care and maintenance, you can enjoy high performance and proper operation of the machine for a long time.

First of all, prior to each wash, it is recommended to make sure that the pockets of the clothing items are empty, that the machine is not loaded with many clothes. A loaded machine will clean the clothes less well.

  1. Keep clean

The washing machine accumulates dust and dirt not only from the inside, but also from the outside. Dust, especially if it is near the drum and inside part of the machine, may mix with the water and penetrate the fibers of the clothing items. Wipe the machine with a damp cloth once every week or two. Clean the door and the rubber that surrounds the drum.

  1. Clean the washing powder drawer

If black spots or powder residues are found in the detergent and softener drawer, it is recommended to wash them as soon as possible. Every time the machine is operated, the detergent the softener are transmitted into the drum and clothes, including the soap residues and even mold that may mature in a dirty drawer. The drawer can be easily pulled out and cleaned with warm water and regular dish soap. Be sure to clean the drawer once a month.

  1. Once a month: remove limescale from internal parts

It is recommended to periodically clean the washing machine systems and its internal parts. Since water in Israel is rich in calcium and the limescale accumulates easily, the machine must be cleared not only from the dirt that accumulates inside it, but also from the limescale, that can clog the machine pipes and disrupt its operation. To remove the limescale, it is recommended to pore a half cup of lemon salt or Sano Anti Kals specifically designated for washing machines into the washing powder compartment and to activate the machine on the boiling program without clothes.

  1. Cleaning the filter

If the clothes come out dirty, with a bad odor or the function of the machine function seems poor, there is no need to urgently call the technician – it may simply be that the filter is blocked. The filter of the machine is usually placed at the bottom of the machine on the front or on one of the sides behind a small lid. Open the lid and release the filter that is screwed inside. It will usually be clogged with traces of powder, hair, rubber bands and even money. Rinse the filter with warm water under the tap and place it back. Note that releasing the filter will be followed with a release of some amount of water. By the way, it is recommended to empty and clean the filter once every three months even if you do not notice any decrease in performance of the machine.

  1. Why do clothes have a bad odor?

Clothes with unpleasant odors can indicate a blocked filter, but not only that. Accumulation of mold and bacteria can spread bad odors too. If the washing machine is infected with the mold, run it empty on the boiling program with half a cup of vinegar, which will destroy the mold and neutralize bad odors. Wipe the rubber around the drum frequently. Keeping the rubber dry between one washing to another will prevent accumulation of bacteria. In addition, when the machine is not in use leave the machine door open to keep the drum ventilated.
